Choosing a Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is often the first thing you do to get your business online, and yet the most crucial when you discover the world of “Search Engine Optimisation”. When you choose your .com or .co.uk the domain name will carry a lot of weight on your search terms.
If your main search phrase is going to be “mouse trap supplier”, then try to get that as the domain. If www.mousetrapsupplier.com is available then go for it! It won’t matter if your business is actually called “Freds Nice And Easy Mouse Catching Service” as your existing customers will find you by either searching direct for you, or they’ll type in the domain on your letterhead.
What it does mean though, is that when a potential customer logs onto google and types in “mouse trap supplier” – Google will find mousetrapsupplier.com and think “well that must be exactly what this person is looking for” – it will then scan the rest of your site, and providing the content mentions mouse traps regularly google will tend to be quite happy and list your site very high up on the search!
If you already have a website set up for your domain name and manage to snag a fantastic one that has your keyword/s in it – then consider setting up a holding page advertising your service. That way it will still show up in search results, market your keywords and content specifically at that particular customer, and then link to your site to direct the reader for further information or a purchase.
Try not to go for any domain other than .com .co.uk or .net – these tend to be the main ones that the search engines like, you can always include dashes, so if mousetrapsupplier is gone, try mouse-trap-supplier or even mousetrap-supplier. A good domain will really help your SEO or Search Engine Optimisation!
